Dunne: Section 92A still needs to be repealed – 24 February 2009
The Government’s deferral of Section 92A of the Copyright Amendment Act for a month needs to be the prelude to a complete repeal, UnitedFuture leader and Ohariu MP Peter Dunne said today.
“The Government has taken a step in the right direction, but I don’t believe that developing the Telecommunications Carriers’ Forum Code of Practice will stop this poorly thought-out piece of legislation becoming a legal minefield,” Mr Dunne said.
“I hope for the sake of internet users all over New Zealand, that this is simply a temporary reprieve for Section 92A, rather than an attempt to shepherd in the law at a later date.
“It seems ridiculous to maintain a law that no-one agrees with and then go to the trouble of trying to develop a workable code of practice when all anybody wants is for the whole thing to be abandoned,” he said.
“I urge Justice Minister Simon Power to listen to New Zealanders who do not want their rights infringed by this legislation.”
“The reality of the law as it stands is not acceptable. I don’t believe it is fair for the Government to pass the buck on to ISPs and users,” Mr Dunne said.
