Last week I attended an international symposium on the future of our charirty laws and processes. What struck me was that all the international speakers thought we had some really good things going here in NZ but we seem to be making change for change's sake and not for logical reasons. In UK, Canada and Australia a independent Charities Commission, outside of any ministerial control is something they would like to have. Since 2005 we have had one but now we are about to see it disappear into the backrooms of the Dept of Internal Affairs!!!

Charities are the backbone of community-and are often unseen in what they do for the good of our country. UnitedFuture has always supported having a strong vibrant sector that is well supported that is why we came up with the deal many years ago on increasing tax exemptions and now we support payroll giving by employees. Form work with abused children, youth with issues, prisoners, addictions strange medical conditions through to palliative care cahrities do the work Government won't and cannot do- so lets keep the institutions we have to support charirties especially those that can represent their work to the Government.
